A Very Old and well-done BLACK FOREST CARVED DOG Fireplace Match-holder and Strike. Very Early Piece Dating to Approximately the 1870’s..Possibly Earlier.Piece is carved from a single piece of wood depicting a finely carved Dog. It’s difficult to see in the photos, but in-person, he’s very well done and has up-right pointed ears, and a broad head. He’s certainly a specific breed, or perhaps the original carvers Dog = not sure. He reminds me of a Bullmastiff, or even a Pit Bull ...Terrier, but I’m not certain of the breed.Piece is very well done, was meant to hold matches as there’s a rough oval shaped match strike on one side as shown in the photos. Piece has its Original patina, has darkened from age as well as from old soot from decades over a fireplace. Piece can be cleaned, but I will leave that to a new owner. Piece is untouched, no attempt was made to polish or clan it, and it has no major damage. Anything minor is in the Carving or due to use, handling over the years and age. I’ve made no attempt to clean it. A very Early Piece and well done with lots of detail and character. Measures: Approximately 4 Inches Tall X 3 1/2” Wide at the bottom Base. Smoke Free Home.
