A fabulous rarity, this is a "Pink Champagne" Platinum Color Magic, as known by vintage Barbie collecting groups. Her hair is the platinum wheat color with numerous overtones that have emerged over the years, like pale orange and pinks, and champagne-tinged ginger.The Color Magic Barbies were introduced into toy stores in 1966 in two hair colors: Bright yellow that changed to bright red, and "midnight" (raven) bl...ack that became ruby red when a watered-down powder solution was applied. Over the years the most prevalent colors seen in the secondary market have been both a very bright "mod" yellow and a more subtle lemon yellow, as well as the ruby red. A platinum blonde Color Magic was test marketed by children, who got to keep the dolls as a "reward" for participating in the studies. For some reason, the platinum dolls were never mass marketed in toy stores which is especially unusual when you consider how wildly popular they are with collectors today. In a sense, you could call these "sample" dolls; certainly they were sample Color Magics.I had not seen a Color Magic with this hair color before, but I do know the paper-white platinum dolls you often see in the market are reportedly not authentic but rather have been dyed. The genuine platinum doll had more of a champagne or ginger hue overlaying the ultra-light blonde hair (platinum wheat). In any event, this doll is a beauty, with high color cheek blush and fabulous eye makeup. No hair cuts or nose nips or missing plugs. She comes on an excellent bend leg body and will come nude.
