Good condition, well kept. Mounted with archival hinges to thick paper. Joseph Peckham evidently perfumed numerous tasks for Ellery as he has been seen on multiple receipts.
William Ellery (1727-1820), Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island. Harvard educated, Ellery became a wealthy merchant, tax collector, and lawyer eventually helping pen the charter for Brown University. During a decade of service to Congress, he focused on maritime affairs. British forces de...stroyed his Newport home in 1778. A noted abolitionist, President Washington appointed him customs collector for Newport in 1790, a post he held for 30 years, until his death at 92.
