Gibson Custom Shop Trini Lopez 2009 model. I've had the '66 and '67 vintages and also the 2014 reissue. This one is the best.
The quality of the Custom Shop version is much better than the Memphis '14 counterpart. I've owned several '09 Custom Shop guitars and the quality has been outstanding. Must've been a good year.
It's the typical ES-335 spec, except the Firebird head...stock, the diamond F-holes, and the custom inlay, which make this one special. Also, this had the Evertune bridge (more below), but I restored it to the original stoptail/ tuneamatic configuration.
Of note:
BIG NECK: is a perfect '59 shape, at least .9" at the first fret. I had a 59' reissue and it's identical. The wide, 1 11/16 nut is much better than the original 66-67 versions.
BURSTBUCKERS: the pickups are Burstbucker 1 and 2. It had 57 Classics originally, I think. When I got it it had T-Tops (the early 70's version). The current configuration rocks!
PEDIGREE: I bought it from Guitar Center awhile ago. They don't (usually) sell schlock.
Condition:
It's in mint condition, except the Evertune bridge restoration. There are some inconsequential finish marks and checks due to it being a decade old, but no serious fret or other wear. I've tried to picture most of the blems, if any. It has been played for 10 years, so please don't expect a brand new instrument. Oh, I just noticed, one knob has the silver insert missing. It's a $5 part though and, of course, purely cosmetic. WHAT WAS CHANGED: Shortly after the purchase, the prior owner installed an Evertune bridge. Google it; it's a Kahler-like contraption that keeps the guitar in tune. A small portion of the top/ center block had to be removed. It was all done professionally, by Evertune. I hated the bridge and had it removed. See last photo for what it looked like. My luthier added the maple/mahogany block and a maple top piece to cover it. He matched the top color. I didnt want to reshoot the top, so thats the best way to do it.
Original Custom Shop case and COA are included.
The current Custom Shop version is $5, 299. The originals are way up there. I just want someone to get a good deal on a player instrument and to play it.
Please see my feedback, ask questions.
Had to bump up the shipping charge because Reverb forces you to buy insurance through it, which has doubled the shipping charges.
Here's the Gibson description from a decade ago:
Growing up in the Latin "barrios" of Dallas, Texas, longtime Gibson signature artist Trinidad "Trini" Lopez, III, learned quickly how to be a survivor, a trait that would serve him well on his way to becoming one of the premier guitar players and songwriters of the early 1960s.
Gibson Custom is proud to once again honor the heritage of this 1960s pop icon with the new 2009 Trini Lopez Reissue, a detailed recreation of the popular Trini Lopez Standard from the mid 1960s. Gibson first honored the "Original Latin Pop Superstar" in late 1964 by introducing two very distinct models bearing his name. The first was the full-body Trini Lopez Deluxe model, fashioned after Gibson's Barney Kessel model, and the other was a thin-body semi-hollowbody electric based on the ES-335 and called the Trini Lopez Standard, the model used as the basis to create today's 2009 Trini Lopez Reissue from Gibson Custom.
This new reissue from the master craftsmen at Gibson Custom features all of the classic appointments that gave the original model its unique look and sound, including a plain laminated maple top, with matching maple back and rim, finished in an antiqued faded red hue that delivers the desired vintage look so commonly sought in today's guitars. Distinct diamond-shaped f-holes adorn the guitar's semi-hollow body, and single-ply white binding decorates the edges of the top and back.
The guitar is available with two tailpiece options: the standard stopbar tailpiece, or a trapeze tailpiece similar to the original design of the late 1960s. Also familiar is the non-reverse Firebird headstock, a design that first appeared on the Trini Lopez Standard model one year before it became a staple motif of the Firebird line, and the figured acrylic split diamond inlays that adorn the guitar's 22-fret rosewood fingerboard.
A pair of Gibson's renowned '57 Classic humbucker pickups [THIS HAS THE T-TOPS] gives the Trini Lopez Reissue all the vintage "PAF" tone expected from such a classic guitar. The 2009 Trini Lopez Reissue comes with a standard Gibson Custom Reissue case and a certificate of authenticity.
