Original Description:
Small mid/late 19th century sampler by Charlotte Hunt aged 14. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters and border patterns with a bird standing at the end of the first row and a chevron border at the end of the last. The lower section contain...s Charlotte's details and those of her school - Wellow Board School. There is a central basket beneath with a dog above and a bird, stag and fruit basket to the left and a bird, diamond and fruit basket to the right, all underlined with a meandering floral border. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow geometric border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the thread are good.  The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Charlotte first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 8 1/2" across x 8"
