Original Description:
Mid/late 19th century sampler by Annie Pace. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1860 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on a soft gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with small spot motifs at the end of certain rows. Annie's name is stitched in the lower section of the gauze with a fruit basket beneath with a bird, tree an...d crown to its left and a floral motif to the right.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a few small faint stains and a row of visible tack marks across the top edge. The colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Annie first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. Measures 7 3/4" x 16 1/2"
