(1861) Civil War Dog Tag - Lincoln War of 1861; M&S 6-A; Rare
Offered for your consideration is an authentic Civil War dog tag which apparently was created for a soldier but then canceled out for some reason, either an error that needed to be corrected, or perhaps it was ordered and never paid for, or perhaps it was used and subsequently marked over for some personal reason.
The dog tag itself is brass 30mm with a portrait of Lincoln and "War of 1861". It wa...s holed as issued and has a brassy cleaned appearance and has what I would call VG/F details remaining. The reverse has a series of ornate marks which I am not familiar with which have been carefully punched over the original information of the soldier for which this piece was originally intended. The owner of the piece from whom I acquired it from, had gone though the arduous task of identifying the original lettering beneath the punch marks and has come up with a name of the soldier and with further research came up with information regarding the soldier. I followed his lead and was able to discern some of the lettering myself but have not put in the time or effort to either confirm nor deny the information he is providing. According to him, it was issued to a Lenhlin(?) B. Jaggard who was a Corporal with the Pennsylvania 150th Regiment in Co. E. There is additional research from the owner that I will include. Again, I can not confirm any of this information. I am selling this as an authentic Civil War dog tag that is more interesting than an unissued one, but which has these enigmatic cancellation marks on the back. A very interesting piece that warrants further study and research.
