Original Description:
Welcome! These beautiful Thunderbird Knifewing earrings (called Hopi Bird by one author) were probably made by the renowned Frank Vacit. They are similar to several elaborate pieces he made, one of which I sold a while back, a picture of which I've included with these earrings in one picture below. Frank's oldest son, Gary, and his wife Paulinis Lamy, made similar birds but less elaborate. I have a pin in my store in their design and I included a picture of that, above, as well. I... believe either Frank or Gary made these and more likely Frank, since the pair has more of the details that Frank's had. They are however a rare example. I haven't seen another pair like it and Frank only worked in this style for a short time. The three colors, indicative of the Pueblo Deco style, were only done during the Art Deco period and only by a small number of Native American artists. The earrings are original screw backs and could be converted to pierced by your jeweler if you wish. They are marked sterling silver on the screw backs, and unsigned but the earrings incorporate elements Frank Vacit used frequently in his work. I make the attribution with confidence as a result of studying them closely. He is one of the most important Zuni artists and these earrings will make a lovely addition to your collection. The earrings measure 1.25" long and 7/16" wide. Their weight is 4.7grams the pair and each weighs about 2.3 grams each, so they are light on the ears. As mentioned, they are unsigned and that is usual for those times. Their condition is excellent vintage, wearable and highly collectible. Blue Jays were very plentiful on the Zuni Pueblo in the past; not so much, now. I would consider these earrings a great recognition of the past and representing the blue birds of happiness.Frank Vacit was born in 1915, and worked from the 1930s to 1950s. He was one of the most talented and great artists in Zuni history. His work resides in the best galleries and museums and he is discussed in every major work. His pieces fetch the highest prices, justifiably, but I've started bidding at far less than the value his pieces command. Anything by Frank Vacit is very valuable. He was one of the great silversmiths. He was highly represented in the CG Wallace catalog for the Sotheby's auction and was one of the most renowned and highly priced of the great artists. These earrings would be an important addition to any wardrobe and any collection. They are exceptionally beautiful. RED TAPE:Please consider marking me as a favorite seller so you can come back and check things out. Be sure to add me to your favorites list!Take a look at my store. Yes, I sometimes can take reasonable offers.
