ITEM: This is a vintage and original 1950s gelatin silver photograph of Evelyn "The Treasure Chest" West, one of the most notorious strippers of the 20th century Golden Age of Burlesque.
Measures 8" x 10" on a single-weight paper stock complete with margins.

Burlesque Actress/Stripper. Evelyn West (Amy Mae Coomer) was a famous stripper in the 1940s to 1960s. She was known as Evelyn "$50, 000 Treasure Chest" West, as she was advertised to have her 39-1/2 inch bust insured by Lloyds of London. She actually had her name legally changed to Evelyn "$50, 000 Treasure Chest" West in 1953. West starred in "A Night at the Follies, " an hour-long black-and-white movie, apparently filmed shortly after the end of World War II. Coming out in a skimpy dress and a fur, she opened by saying: "I know you're looking at my shoes." She enjoyed a national reputation, appearing in clubs from Los Angeles to Miami Beach and in 50-cent magazines with names like Blush, Wolf Bait and Fever for Men. Later, she primarily performed in St. Louis at the Stardust Theater in Gaslight Square, an entertainment district of the mid-1950s that hosted entertainers such as The Smothers Brothers, Lenny Bruce, Miles Davis, Barbra Streisand, Jackie Mason, Mike Nichols, Phyllis Diller, Woody Allen, Jerry Stiller and Dick Gregory. Evelyn West performed before as many as 1, 500 customers a week, earning 90 cents for each patron. Over time, the Stardust Club and Evelyn came under increased police scrutiny, and in 1977, the Stardust Club closed and Evelyn and her husband, Alexander Charles, moved to Hollywood, Florida. After her husband died, she lived quietly as Amy Charles, where her death went unnoticed.
