This is a very rare professional grade proportionalscale divider. It is a drawing tool that is still employed today by artists, drafting architects, engineers, cartographers and nautical chart makers andanyone who looks for accuracy when reproducing an image larger or smaller thanthe original. This was made by the top Georgian and Victorian era artistmaterial supplier G. Rowney & Company of London (still in business today) inthe latter half of the 19th century. It comes in its orig...inal redleather covered, cobalt velvet and purple watered silk lined fitted case withbrass hardware. The Rowney name on anything meant quality and this divider isno exception. It is made with all of the precision you would see on the finest19th century scientific equipment. Unlike most this is the onlyexample I have ever encountered where the slide in the center is actuallygeared and travels the length of the center by turning one of the knobs. This wouldallow for much greater accuracy that the traditional free sliding design. It’slittle details like that and the beautiful hand etched markings on both sidesthat this was a tool designed for the very top people to use. These Rowney scientificgrade pieces are quite rare to find, they would sell 1000 times more paint, brushes, canvass than a piece like this.
