The term Art Deco refers to a style that spanned the boom of the roaring 1920s and the bust of the 1930s but as an influential visual arts design ...style it first appeared in France during World War I. It is an eclectic style that is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. Designers sought to infuse jaded traditions with new life and to create a modern style based on a revitalised decorative language
The spawning ground for this new visual culture was the French fashion industry. Collected together here on one amazing data DVD are an extensive collection of French fashion periodicals and brochures dating from this period which did much to reestablish French primacy in the world of grande luxe and haute couture fashion. These publications are characterised by their stunning illustrations using the pochoir stenciling process and feature works by many of the leading illustrators of the day such as Georges Barbier, Paul Iribe, Pierre Brissaud, André Edouard Marty, Georges Lepape, Robert Bonfils, Charles Martin, Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Armand Vallee, Valentine J Hugo and others. Rather than simply drawing a mannequin in the outfit, like most previous fashion illustrators, these artists depicted the model in various dramatic and narrative situations.
GAZETTE DU BON TON
Perhaps the most notable of these publications, Gazette du Bon Ton was launched by Lucien Vogel in 1912 as an elitist magazine, available only to subscribers and covered the latest developments in fashion, lifestyle, and beauty. Published here in volumes or“tomes”, each tome represents approximately 6 months of issues, and runs for anywhere between 260 to 380 pages in length. Practically all pages feature illustrations of some kind with each volume containing between 50 and 75 full page color plates and including many fantastic illustrated period advertisements also.
LA GUIRLANDE; ALBUM MENSUEL D'ART ET DE LITTÉRATURE
Published in Paris in 1919-1920 under the artistic direction of Umberto Brunelleschi, "La Guirlande" is one of the rarest examples of these Art Deco magazines and includes pochoir plates by leading artists of the day.
PAUL POIRET
Paul Poiret was a leading French fashion designer during the first two decades of the 20th century. Two notable portfolios of his designs: Les Robes de Paul Poiret and Les Choses de Paul Poiret have become seminal moments in the development of Art Deco graphics.
MODES ET MANIERES D'AUJOURD' HUI
Appearing in the same year as Gazette du Bon Ton, these exquisitely printed, limited edition album productions featured the pochoir designs of Georges Lepape, Charles Martin and George Barbier. Albums from the years 1912-1914.
ROBES ET FEMMES
Published in 1913 by Italian designer working in Paris, Enrico Sacchetti, this rare portfolio featured 13 hand colored lithographs in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies.The full work in its entirety
