Fisher's Island NY /Pre 1880s De Witt Clinton Sage made his fortune in Connecticut during the Civil War. After an illness, he recuperated on the eastern end of Long Island called Fishers Island. He learned that the clay deposits that the glaciers left behind were superior for... brick making. De Witt Clinton Sage, set up a brick making yard in Greenport, NY in 1887. SAGE bricks were superior in quality and ended up in several mills, public buildings, and private homes in New England and New York. Easy access to LONG ISLAND SOUND, made shipping SAGE bricks very convenient by barge. There was high demand for quality bricks in the late 19th Century due to the rapid building of textile and manufacturing mills which required 20 million bricks to build a four story mill with fir timbers (no steel beams were used until the 1930s). The Hurricane of 1938 wiped out the SAGE BRICK WORKS and the business never reopened. Additionally, steel was replacing brick in the building of mills. This is an old SAGE brick that is dated to pre 1890s due to color of the brick and aggregate. These bricks were made by hand, this is why you see imperfections in individual bricks of this era.
