John Henry O'Hara, who ...lived from 1905--1970, was born in Pennsylvania, the son of a physician. O'Hara claimed to have taught himself to read before the age of four. He refused to go to medical school, even though his father offered to put $10, 000.00 in the bank. He began working for the NEW YORKER magazine, a job that lasted a lifetime. In 1930, O'Hara met Helen Ritchie Petit, a COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY alum and they were married but they divorced in 1933. He later married Belle Wylie and after her death, he married Katherine Barnes Bryan. This volume has three stories: "The Girl on the Baggage Truck, " which begins with MALLOY, working as a "rewrite man" for a New York newspaper, doing a piece on THOMAS R. HUNTERDEN, whose meteoric rise in the world of finance has made him famous; "Imagine Kissing Pete, " and "We're Friends Again, " a compelling mixture of components and characters from the first two stories and a glimpse of the small worlds that comprise New York City---the worlds of theater, nightclubs, gossip columns, politics, and finance.
