(Karelian Mythology / Finnish Mythology / Folklore) THE KALEVALA: THE EPIC POEM OF FINLAND. Translated into English by John Martin Crawford. Illustrated with black and white frontispieces. [TWO VOLUMES] New York: John B. Alden Publisher, 1888. First editions. Octavos. Incredibly rare two volume translation of The Kalevala, a 19th-century work of epic poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology, telling an epic story about the Creation of the ...Earth; regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland (one of the most significant works of Finnish literature) and was notably instrumental in the development of the Finnish national identity and the intensification of Finland's language strife that ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. Bound in the publisher's blue cloth covered boards, with gilt-stamped titles and top edge gilt. Page edges untrimmed. Contents toning slightly. Previous owner's ink signature to the front flyleaf of both volumes. The boards are somewhat rubbed and worn, particularly along the extremities. Overall, a really solid set of this remarkably scarce epic! Please see photos for additional condition and edition clarity. ******PLEASE NOTE****** There may be delays in shipping.
