I bought this Sierra Designs Tiros Assault CD tent new in about 1996 or 1997, when I worked at a ...SD dealer. I figured I'd buy the heaviest-duty tent I could afford so that I'd be set for a worst-case scenario. In the intervening years, I used the tent on two week-long trips, one in the early fall in Wisconsin and one in the summer in Arkansas. This tent is solid and stands up to wind and rain very well, but is overkill in mild conditions like those, let me tell you. It turns out I don't really want to go on an expedition, and this tent was never utilized very much, and certainly never to its capabilities. I'm older now and tend to stay close to home, and I'm downsizing.
I unpacked this tent last weekend for the first time in at least fifteen years. The fly was stuck to itself, and the footprint/ground cloth was stuck to itself. With careful and patient peeling, I was able to get them separated, and I then washed both in my bathtub in mild dish soap and lukewarm water. I left them to air-dry for a week, and they feel slightly tacky but not sticky. There seem to be some thin spots on the fly, and the footprint is visibly peeling, so both the footprint and the rainfly will need to be re-waterproofed. The tent floor does not feel sticky or tacky, but it did stick slightly to the mesh when I unrolled it, so the tent floor may also need to be re-waterproofed. I make no claims as to the waterproofness of the tent, fly, or footprint.
On to the good: this tent is in well-cared for condition. There are no holes, rips, snags, tears, frayed areas, anything, that I could find. I always take care of equipment, and this tent was never put away or stored while wet. No mold or odors. All zippers work perfectly. If you're up for redoing the waterproofing on this, here's a great chance to get a true mountaineering tent at a discount.
Please ask all questions before bidding or buying. I am responsive to all inquiries, but in this case I am VERY reluctant to set up the tent again in my small house, so you'll have to make do with the photos in the listing.
Here is a page of reviews for this tent, dating from way back in the nineties: http://www.outdoorreview.com/product/product-archives/outdoor-equipment/backpacking-camping-hiking/tents/sierra-designs/tiros-assault.htmlFor what it's worth, I concur with the reviews.
This is a large package, so I am offering several options for shipping. Please choose the one you want at checkout.
Thanks.
