If you’re a fan ofthis set – and who isn’t? I mean, justlook at it – then you know how exceedingly rare it is to find one intact, much lessin such pristine condition. This is a1933 Atwater Kent model 165 cathedral radio, and its hallmark is that gorgeouslattice work grille. That lattice isvery thin and delicate, which is why you almost never find one of these setscomplete and intact like this; it’s also likely the reason Atwater Kent nevermade another set li...ke this one. (I’m notsure anyone else ever did, either.) Ifound this set about 25 years ago in Tunica, Mississippi, of all places, and tothis day it remains the only intact and completely original AK 165 I have everseen in person. (For some reason, theknobs seem to have a tendency to disappear, too, which is a shame, because asyou can see, the original wooden knobs are lovely, too.) I know collectors who have tried to replacepart or all of the grille, but sadly, as they would all tell you, it nevercomes out quite right. One of the thingsthat makes this set so attractive is its size: It’s just 14.5”h x 12.25”w x 8”d, much smaller than the typical AtwaterKent cathedral. As you can see from therear shot, this set is a wonder of design – a full five-tube chassis (with shields!)and a hefty speaker fit into a compact space. As is true for all AK radios in my experience, this set is a realperformer, playing quite loud with tremendous clarity. At night, here in Maine, it picks up stationsall up and down the east coast and on into the Midwest. It has been restored electronically, andplayed every day. The cabinet finish, with two-tone highlights, is all original, as is the Atwater Kent decal! I have enjoyed this set for many years, butnow I’m downsizing so it’s time to pass it along to another collector who willenjoy it as I have. If you have alwayswanted to own one of these but have despaired of finding one that is complete, original and pristine, this is your lucky day! You will look long and hard for another.
