Scarce first edition hardback with rare dust wrapper. The book is oblong format and is bound in illustrated paper covered boards over a maroon cloth spine.
The dust wrapper is of the envelope type with all 6 flaps present.
The book measures 9" x ...11¾"and it has 12 pages of text + 52 pages of colour illustrations.
The book is illustrated with 6 line drawings within the 12 pages of text followed by 26 double page chromolithograph plates. Most plates have moveable flaps to lift up, and cut out figures (still intact on their sheets) to place in the scenes.
Loosely inserted at the rear of the book are the uncut characters to cut-out and interact with the house.
These pages have figures of Cook, Alice, Nurse, 3 Umbrellas and Dolly's Family and her dearest friends including her Mummie, Daddy, Binkie, Bobbie, Sweep and Priscilla's Best Friend.
The Dolly's Home is a rather elaborate dwelling with a gated drive, a fountain, formal parlours, play rooms, dining room, nursery, a croquet field and much more.
The inside back cover has a pasted on envelope for placing the characters in once they have been cut.
The book forms a "virtual" doll's house with a sequence of rooms and gardens.
The reader is enticed to explore, moving from room to room by opening hinged doors and gates, which lets them peer from one scene to another before turning the page.
Each of the 26 double-page spreads is a new scene, illustrated with hand-stippled shading by the illustrator Margarethe Stannard, and as well as opening doors, many of the rooms contain opening cupboards and other little corners to explore.
Just a little bumping to the corners, with the rear bottom right corner shelf worn.I have spotted one insignificant 1/4 cm tear to the hinge of one opening flap, all the other moveable parts are exceptional. Some age toning to the title page from the envelope type dust wrapper (see photograph), otherwise internally very, very clean.
The very rare dust wrapper has conservation repair, especially to the spine but it has suffered only minor loss.
Overall a very bright example of a very scarce Children's Illustrated Book.
