Mid/ate 19th century sampler by Catherine Leslie aged 11 - 1879. Worked in wool on soft gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with Catherine's details and the date of 1879 followed by a heart and two crucifix motifs. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit basket with a row of crown, heart, cross, flower and diam...ond motifs above and numerous sets of family initials on each side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a delightful two storey red house which has a small diamond motif to the left and right of its roof and a lawn on either side of its steps each piece of grass with a dog, tree, bird and flower basket at the side. There is a crown above each flower basket with a set of initials over each then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss to the outside red line border. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Catherine first stitched it. Measures 15 1/4" x 15 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
