Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Hannah Parker - 1828. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a delightful scene of a central arbour with a roses on its roof which has a bird standing at each end and a quartet of birds above. There is woman inside the arbour holding a bunch of grapes in each hand as she stands beneath three further bunches of grapes. The arbour has a bush on each side with... a prancing stag next to the left bush with a heart over his head and a rambling rose to his right and left, a colourful bird perched on top of each. There is a recumbent stag by the right side bush with a floral urn at his side and a heart and bird above him. The rose covered roof of the arbour has a rose basket and bird to its left and a rose bush and bird to the right. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has a rambling rose plus bird on each side with a flower basket, heart and bird by the left side rose and a floral motif by the one on the right
Teach me the path of sin to shunAnd holiness persueWith all thy chosen race to runAnd keep the prize in view
There is a central plaque beneath the verse which contains Hannah's name and the date of 1828 with a heart above and a flower basket on each side, a bird above each. There is a red gatehouse/folly beneath the plaque with a trio of birds standing on its towers and a bird standing on each side. The left side bird has a fruit basket and rose by his side whilst the right side bird has a shaped framework with a squirrel inside and a rose next to him. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, a tree at their side. The left side tree has a bird in flight above and a dog and rosebush by its side whilst the right side tree also has a bird in flight above and a red lion and rosebush to its side. There is a bird standing on the top of the Tree of Knowledge with a cherub hovering to his left and right followed by a bird and bird in flight. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep arcaded strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with areas of grubbiness and some small scattered marks. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are extensive areas of damage around the edges of the linen and a few much smaller areas to the field, the one in the name plaque having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss to Hannah's first name. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured background the damage to the field would be less noticeable.Measures 17 1/4" x 20 1/4"
