EARLY 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY HANNAH BENTLEY - 1826

Early 19th century sampler by Hannah Bentley - 1826. Worked in silk on soft gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Adam has a floral motif and windmill to his side whilst Eve has a flower basket, floral motif and bird next to her. The middle section of the gauze is stitched wi...th a central heraldic shield held aloft by a lion and unicorn. The initials of the king at that time GR - George IV - are stitched to the left and right of the animals with a tree above and below each letter. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with the following short verse
My soul come meditate the dayAnd think how near it standsWhen thou must quit this house of clayAnd fly to unknown lands
Hannah's name and the date of 1826 are stitched beneath the verse then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some damage and fraying around the edges. The colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there and some bleeding to parts of the darker stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the field of the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. I also want to mention that the red apples on the Tree and the blue unicorn are worked in wool rather than silk so it is possible that these may have been done by different hand at a later date.Measures 12" x 13 1/2"
