ROLLER: This rollsign has NO metal roller at the close of the sign. Notice the photos.Has some grime and dirt on some areas, no one tried to clean up so all original dirt and whatever is still there. Printed on a heavy cloth like material, not shiny and thin paper. There are no major holes in any part of the... sign, just some wear and tear along the side edges. Some sections have tape on them, please check the photos for that, check the panel for "Euclid Av", that one has the most taped up area.
There is no printed info to state who made the sign and any year it was done, or any car equipment notes. The top of the rollsign is much more dirty and has faded out lettering compared to the middle part of the sign.
Description: Original New York City subway system front destination sign, letter lines rollsign. This was used inside actual New York Subway cars that are now long scrapped and not in use.The car types that we conclude this sign could be from was either B-types or D-types subway cars, now long since scrapped and these signs are very rare to get. Used by NYCTA system. We are not sure if this rollsign was used in any R1 to R9 type cars or any cars made prior. This sign could easily be 1930's or 1940's timeframe. There is no stamp that has any manufacturers info to prove when the sign was made or any notes written on the reverse side to consider for any date. The material is a thick cloth type design, not thin and shiny like later rollsigns were made. These are very early made rollsigns done like this and not on a metal sign either like Lo-V cars were. Nice large font letters you can notice from a distance, unlike the digital rollsigns now used on new cars running in the NY subway system. They don't and won't make them like this anymore.
The sign shows letters various locations and stations mostly in Brooklyn and The Bronx.
These are letter lines used for the BMT and IND train divisions and most of the square boxes for each location are in very good shape, not much deterioration to them but some have more dirt on them and lettering maybe faded out more compared to other sections.
The rollsign is not easy to get so here's a chance to add to your train collection. Check our Ebay postings for other NY subway posters and train items you may want, we have things from New York and other cities.
Dimensions of the sign once all rolled up: Length: 20 inches Diameter: 2 in.
