LATE JURASSIC"PTERODACTYLUS SCAPHOGNATHUS"Cast stone panel, quartzite-limestone, 30 cm x 21 cm (approx 12 x 8.25 inches), 15 mm thickness (half inch) with inset back-hanging chain & description label. Casting of 19th century Berlin Natural History Museum "Pterodactylus Scaphognathus" skeleton showing remarkable detail, from Late Jurassic limestone at Solnhofen, originally Bavaria, in Germany. This specimen discovered in 1826 by German scientist August Goldfuss when investigating Bava...rian lithographic limestone strata. Original fossil was destroyed during World War 2 and only the mold survives. Pterodactylus Scaphognathus (meaning “Fat Snout”) is one of the first Pterodactyls discovered and named in the early 19th century. A “Rhamphorhynchoid” from the Late Jurassic, it was approximately the size of a large bat with short tail and a set of razor-sharp teeth growing straight up out of a broad jaw. It had an estimated wingspan of a meter (three feet.) This unusually well-preserved skull revealed Scaphognathus possessed a surprisingly large brain much more similar to modern birds than other dinosaurs. The Solnhofen limestone deposits gave science a dozen or more Pterodactyl species. Despite other salt-water specimens found in England and France, Solnhofen still offers the best preserved examples, with extraordinary details such as the razor teeth, as well as clear wing impressions showing them to be connected to a single long finger on each hand.
