This listing features a beautiful, fully opalized specimen of petrified wood originating from near the Idaho and Oregon border at Coal Mine Basin! This opalized wood specimen was dug prior to the 1970s as the coloration and contrast of the peanut brittle-like opal is indicative of the deposits that were initially surface gathered and the ones that were undercut into sandstone cliffs. The old-timers diggings were collapsed by the BLM half a century ago because of the unsafe, unstable sa...ndstone caverns and the ongoing, very risky excavations. The specimen exhibits excellent opal replacement that is stable and naturally shines! The cut face of the limb exhibits beautiful grain structure, but the reverse side is just as good! The specimen could be displayed with the cut face down, and this would be my preferred orientation. The spectacular opalized fossil wood was photographed wet except for the last two photographs which show the petrified wood while dry; there is very little difference as the opal is naturally shining! The opalized fossil wood specimen weighs 1 pound 8.4 ounces and measures 124mm by 97mm by 79mm tall. I will combine shipping for multiple purchases as long as the specimens can be packaged in a manner that minimizes the potential for damage.
