This exceptionally beautiful round is cut from the heel (end) of the log and features several boring insect tunnels full of petrified debris and in some cases even the remains of tiny seed shrimp (ostracods) that were petrified along with the log! This one has one pocket on the lower edge with really nice ones in fact! There is also a nice dark calcite crystal that fills some of the agate voids in this area. The display face is cut and polished to a mirror ...finish to reveal all of the color and fossil detail of the petrified wood while the back is still rough and naturally weathered. This is one of the most beautiful and interesting logs I've had the pleasure of polishing recently! Here's an absolutely museum grade Blue Forest petrified wood round cut from the end of a perfectly formed log that's really been chewed up by some boring insects! Of course, this happened before the log was petrified - it would be a scary bug that could tunnel through rock and leave agate filled trails behind!! It's got really nice wood preservation throughout with a very well defined heart in the center of the log and the most stunning wood grain you'll ever see in one of these pieces! It's accented with several veins of translucent blue agate filling natural splits and voids in the log. The heart is clearly visible in the center of the round but the numerous boring insect trails are what really catch your eye! Eden Valley is home to some of the best petrified wood in Wyoming, including the Blue Forest. It is a uniquely preserved everglade like bed of small branches and occasional logs in central Wyoming. It's part of the same "fossil lake" formation that a lot of the best known fossil fish are recovered in. The digging is hot and dusty, but every once in a while you stumble on a real treasure and this little log is one of them! The dark coffee, caramel, blue and black colors the wood is preserved in are characteristic of these specimens, as are the infusions of blue agate that filled the cracks and coated the log! This is a perfectly formed round taken from the end of a medium sized log from a pepperwood tree. This is the same species that most of the Blue Forest rounds are as well. It's been cut and polished to show off all the gemmy detail from this 50+ million year old treasure captured inside. It took a pretty awesome polish - something we strive to produce on every specimen we put our name on! The fibrous cell structure of the radial wood grain is exceptional in this specimen, and easily studied with a hand lens. This is a fairly typically sized specimen, and it is close to perfect - something that will show proudly in any collection. It measures about 4 7/8" x 3 5/8" across the polished face and is a maximum of about 0.81" thick (rough and naturally articulated on the back). Weight is 0.60 lbs. A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary - eBay's Original Rockshop!
