You are bidding on Superb Antique British Cavalry Sword from early 1800s; the turbulent time of Napoleonic Wars. The design of this type of swords was influenced by the Duke of Wellington, who was the Commander-in-Chief.He was first who was carrying a Mameluke-hilt sword. The Mameluke hinted sabres was popular among Hussars Officers since early 1800s and were also in use in the United States Marine since 1825. Tactically Hussars were used as best for swift attacks, raiding and scr...een for other troops. It was not a rare sight to see a hussar in a forefront of a hack-and-slash melee, gripping his reins with his teeth, a pistol in one hand and Mameluke hilt saber in the other.The Hussars enjoyed reputation for bravery and an uninhibited joie-de-vivre when not. They had their own code - that of reckless curage that bordered on a death wish. The hussars were the eyes, ears and egos of the army.
This is a beautiful fighting sword overall length is 38”. Fierce looking curved blade with 11” false edge was effective slashing and thrusting weapon in hand of skillful user. The blade is still razor sharp. The blade fits nice and tight into the scabbard and draws smoothly with nice retention. The darkened scabbard with two mounting bands and manufacturing motto which is hard to read.
