These scissors were hand crafted in Campobasso by Bartholomeo Terzano for Pope Pius the IX in 1867.
Only one similar set has been found, a set of two razors and one pair of scissors made by Bartholomeo Terzano for Napoleon III and found in Italy.
Both pairs of scissors are are marked. The larger marked B. Terzano, the smaller marked BT.
Further, the leather case is engraved with the Coat of Arms of Pope Pius the IX and the back of the case... is dated with Roman Numerals and the name of the case maker, Josephus Vitolo and Campobasso.
The large pair is extraordinary, each side is engraved with a different saying but each side having the same number of letters and numbers so that the sayings are aligned with the number of characters carved out from the steel
Latin on one side of the scissors: plaudiamo gioiosi al 18 centenario del beato Pietro, dal popolo sannita (We joyfully applaud the 18th centenary of Blessed Peter, by the Samnite people)
Latin on the second side: Artifex donat pio nono pontifici maximo Barth Terzano (The artist gift to the Pope Pius IX, Barth Terzano)
It is likely there is a comb or knife missing from the set.
