Vintage Majolica Figural Monk Tobacco Jar/Humidor; C. 1920 German/Austrian
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:44693527 |
This particular jar is called "Monk" a...nd dates to 1920. It features a well-detailed head of a monk with grey hair, red lips, and rosey cheeks, wearing a brown hood. It has matte and gloss finishes. The hood is the removeable top of the jar and there is a circular cut-out in the hood's bottom, presumably where one could put a piece of moist clay or sponge to create humidity in the jar to keep the tobacco fresh. Like many of his jars, this one does not have his BB mark on the underside. However, the numbers 3605 8 are incised there and some research shows that those numbers correspond to a Bernhard Bloch 'Monk' tobacco jar. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, scratches or cracks except for a small indentation in the inside rim on which the top sits (See next to last photo) where possibly there had been a chip repair. However, because of its location, it is hardly noticeable at all.. The top is blemish free, with no chips or cracks. Shipped USPS Priority Mail within three business days after receiving payment.
