Grape Family wood (Vitaceoxylon sp.)Trout Creek Formation, MioceneZimmermann Ranch, near McDermit, Nevada The grape family has a lot of different vines from the wine grapes to Virginia Creepers to Treebine Vine. They all have differing wood anatomy but the one thing all genera have in common is very LARGE vessels. It is quite likely that other genera may have been in existence during Miocene time so we don't want to try and attach a common name or species to ...this sample. But the closest matching wood anatomy to this specimen is Treebine Vine (Cissus sp.). Note that there is only a hint of the rays between the very tightly packed pores, . Many of the other genera have wide to very wide rays. the pores in this specimen are quite uniform in size but that too is a distinction from other genera which have pores in two distinct sizes. All of these factors mirror the modern day Cissus Genus. Nevertheless, the proper way to identify it is with the fossil genus Vitaceoxylon sp. and we wiull go with that. This one is a nice manageable size for collectors with a minimum amount of storage space for the collection. This limb section measures 9/16" in diameter” on the polished face and it is 1 7/8" long.
