Star Trek “City on the Edge of Forever”2004 Hallmark “Keepsake” Light and Sound CollectableOneof the most acclaimed episodes of theoriginal 1960’s Star Trek series “TheCity on the Edge of Forever" This episode and many other have beencelebrated with Hallmark holiday ornaments for many years.This28th episode was first broadcast on NBC on April 6, 1967. In the episode, aftera heavily medicated Doctor Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) travels back in timeand changes ...history, Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) followhim to correct the timeline. In doing so, Kirk falls in love with Edith Keeler(Joan Collins), but realizes that in order to save his future, he must allowher to die. The2004 Hallmark Holiday issue was nicely detailed and the original soundtrack bits between CaptKirk, Mr Spock and the mysterious “Guardian” were fantastic. Just one problem, with a majority of them the voice feature did not work, failed after a short time or was garbled.Severaldesign flaws caused the voice feature (separate from the light) to fail immediately or over time. The few that did work often had a garbled orfragmented voice feature. The installed capacitor was too weak to handle the voltage load and most failed. It is not too difficult to replace the capacitor (see picture 12) however this did not always fix the problem. The voice could still be garbled or just stop mid sentence due to not having sufficient DC voltage.
In the case of this ornament the capacitor upgrade fixed the sound however the sound was very weak, you had to hold it up to your ear just to hear it.The wood looking pedestal is from a broken snow globe. I removed the small faulty speaker from the unit and hooked up a much larger speaker. At 2.5 inches it is about 5 times bigger then the original speaker it puts out between 6 to 8 bBA (decibals). It was of course far to large to go inside this now "diorama" . The speaker is shock mounted in acoustic materiel pointing down inside the pedestal.
This listing includes the repaired ornament with box(fair shape) which will be empty since modified ornament will no longer fit in it and original paperwork

With the included power supply the ornament is now running on a much higher voltage then originally rated. A "legacy" cord came out from Hallmark around 2009 for older ornaments that upped the voltage from the original 6 to 12 volts so am sure they did some testing. My configuration is around the same power. The DC power supply reflects an output of 9 volts tested at around 12. Leaving the unit switched on for a long period or time, like overnight could damage the unit.
