This is an absolutely fabulous painting of Samson being captured. The complexity of figures and scenes is mind blowing. There is no doubt that a true master artist painted this. It is original canvas, original stretcher, and in fabulous condition. No frame. It measures 28 1/4 by 21". Has been in our collection for 20 years. We attribute this to William James Webbe for many many reasons, but you be the judge. The quality, brush strokes, br...ight colors matching his palette, matching formation of 1880 numbers formation and on each side of his initials, shadowing of scenes within the painting, biblical theme (which he did for book illustrations), " " " " ". Typically he signed WJW which is different than this JW, but we find reference to his biblical illustrations being signed differently. Information is scarce on his biblical pieces.
