NOTE! This is not the ORIGINAL according to Sy Schreckinger, who has a detailed article in Mechanical Banks about the Uncle Sam bank... the originals had a 5" width at the wide part of the base!
However ...its mechanical behavior is just as the original was which was patented. And I have been told that this version was made by Wilton in Connecticut. A clue is the bank door.
Bank operates as it should by inserting coin in Uncle Sam's hand, and depressing button. Coin purse opens and coin drops in. Key & Lock is missing, as a result door does not close properly. Please look carefully at the photos. The item presents well, and the colors match the colors for this bank and it appears to have most of its original paint. It is priced to reflect its presentation as a piece. The originals were not primed, and rusted causing paint loss, it is likely this was the version that came primed in a later run, but subsequent owners touched it up. It is definitely an older maybe even circa 1900 version. We believe it is made in America and maybe? Shepard Hardware... based on the patent and functional aspects.
The Beard does move as the arm movesActual production date is unknown. There are no marks other then the patentUncle Sam is cast in a ribbon above eagle on the front. And the word 'Bank' is on each side.
"Peter Adams Jr. and Charles G. Shepard created the first Uncle Sam bank. But it was the Shepard Hardware Company of Buffalo, New York that produced the first one in 1886. This particular cast-iron mechanical bank features an umbrella-carrying Uncle Sam standing on a decorated base holding a suitcase. By placing a coin in his hand and pressing the knob on the box, Uncle Sam lowers his arm and puts the money into the U.S Treasury bag. The beard on his lower jaw moves as if he’s talking". These banks were produced from 1896 to 1900.. Reproductions with different heights, bases, functions have been produced ever since. This is a US made version recast reproduction.
