Antique Civil War Era Surgeon ' S TREPHINE Skull DRILL Brass & Metal For Medical
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:45276259 | Time Period Manufactured: Pre-1930 |
A Trephine was used in operations of the skull to reduce pressures in the head due to fractures and such and also to relieve intracranial pressure due to brain hemorrhaging. The size is approximately 4 3/4 inches.
I found this amongst other tools from my Great Grandfathe...r & Grand fathers antique tool collection that dates back to the mid 1800s to Early 1900s.
It also comes with extra size bits. So you get 8 Total bits with this, the bits alone add on to the value as most around only have1 bit included and I saw reproduction bits selling for over $35 each and these are original.
I did not find any markings on this so I don't know who made it. I would also like to say that it is tested and works, but I don't think I would want to try it :) But the bits unscrew and it seems to be in solid condition. Please use the photos to judge the overall condition. But I personally would rate it as in Very
Good condition for it's age. There are scratches throughout and has marks, so please study the photos and Please ask me if you would like to see more photos or any questions. The only cleaning I did was with a light solution of distilled water and Isopropyl Alcohol. 50/50 Mix and lightly got some of the dust off. I use the same solution to clean my Photography lenses with so it is safe.
Please look at the photos carefully because they are the main part of the description. And I am listing this as Civil War Era - late 1800's but it could be early 1900's but I am leaning more towards the mid 1800's since many of my tools date back to then that I inherited.

i have tried my best to describe this and the only true way to know it's description is by you looking at the photos and asking me to see more if you are in doubt.
