Original Description:
This is a nicely polished and particularly beautiful slab from a very highly agatized petrified log from Argentina!  The wood is extremely polished with a mirror perfect finish to reveal all of the agate color and wood structure preserved in this ancient fossil log.  This was a log I cut years ago but recently found a few more slices squirreled away in my shop.  The wood structure is very nice but it's the highly polished agate face ...in the classic but now seldom seen "picture wood" motif that makes this one really attractive and highly collectible.   Darker than most wood from this forest, it's a really impressive piece! This is the heel cut from the end of the log, rough and naturally weathered on the back and sides.  It's a nice display specimen with a wonderful finish. Did I mention the polish?!  You'll understand when you see this one! This is one of the most beautiful, complete petrified wood rounds from one of the most exotic new locations I've seen in quite a while. This very fine grade of petrified wood came from the southern tip of South America in Argentina! It is what remains of an ancient forest that thrived many millions of years ago. This round comes from one of the newest logs we've gotten from that part of the world. I'm not even going to attempt a guess at the species (I wouldn't recognize any of the South American trees today, let alone several million years ago!) I can say, however, that the cell structure is consistent with conifer trees (and it's preserved more than well enough for a paleobotanist to have a go at). Some of the giant conifers from North America share these same characteristics. There are more subtle shades of yellow, black, red and orange in here than my camera can do justice with. Some of the regions are even a metallic hematite! This top quality round is not only 100% there, rind and all, but it has some of the most stunning growth ring detail you'll ever see in petrified wood. The heart of the log actually looks scalloped. I can't tell if that's the coloration of the mineral deposits or if the wood grew that way when it was alive - but it's gorgeous either way! If the timeless mystery of this piece isn't enough for you, then I'm certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be. The colors are warm and rich and the entire piece is completely preserved in a very high grade of agate. The high agate content allows this stone to be polished to a liquid perfect, lustrous finish that only the best grades of fossil wood can achieve. This round is on the larger side for most of the Argentina specimens I've seen. In fact, I've only cut 2 logs that are larger and not seen any bigger outside of books. A nice piece to broaden your own collection with and based on what I've learned from this deposit now it will surely be a uniquely colored specimen! This round is cut from the end of a very solid log. It's really a nice piece, but what else would you expect from a business named "Sticks-in-Stones"?! Polished to the highest standards, we guarantee you'll be pleased to show off this fine specimen in your own collection. This piece measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/8" across the mirror polished face and is cut to a maximum of about 0.94" thick. Weight is 0.74 lbs.  Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary is happily providing UPS & USPS shipping to greatly reduce shipping charges on large rock orders. We will combine all of your purchases from our shop to bring you the greatest possible value in fine Lapidary & stone collectibles!
