ANTIQUE ARTS & CRAFTS ' MEEKER MADE ' WOMAN ' S BROWN EMBOSSED LEATHER PURSE, LINED
Item History & Price
MEEKER MADE, a highly regarded woman's purse and leather goods company based in Joplin, Mo., for many years only sold their beautifully crafted purses directly through the company or from their "regular Meeker salesmen". The purses could not be bought in retails stores or through jobbers, were known as the 'aristocrat of handbags' during their golden years, 1900's-1930's. Most of the beautiful tooling and embossing and lacing on their steerhide leather purses & similar leathergoods was done by hand, which is one of the many reasons why these beautiful items have lasted so long and in such terrific shape.
Measures: 8 inches from top of handle curve to bottom; 6.5 inches across the bottom, with a short embossed leather-laced strap, dark gun metal frame with secure Turnloc patented clasp and fob, brand is "MEEKER MADE", JOPLIN, MO. during the early 1900's. Remnants of the original owner's name and address are written inside on the suede lining, which we have not attempted to remove, feel it adds to the personal charm of this. The purse itself is in very good condition, with beautiful cowhide leather which has been embossed and decorated by hand in the iconic Arts & Crafts style.
