Here we have a very unusual brass cased thermometer. It is marked by engraving on the barrel: "U.S.B.F. No. 254". WE feel that stands for the United States Bureau of Fisheries, a government agency from 1877 to 1948. Quite likely this piece is from the 19th century. It measures 5 1/2" long and is heavy, solid brass. It has a screw top with an eye for a cord. We have not tried to force off the screw top. Shipping weight, well packed, is under 1 lb.
