For your consideration is this English Staffordshire antique hard paste porcelain figural spill vase. Wonderful pair of seated dogs with applied bits of porcelain coats. An open tree stump for containing the spills. A British dictionary published in 1855 defined a spill as a strip of rolled paper or thin strip of wood. Pieces like this would usually be placed on a mantle to hold splints, spills or tapers to transfer a fireplace flame to light a candle, lamp, pipe or c...igar.
