Replace the diode in your crystal radio with this kit. Designed to be used with the “experimental crystal radio” sold on ebay. In the early days of radio semiconductor devices had not been invented. In order to detect signals from radio waves a thin wire, known as a Cat's whisker, was moved around the surface of a crystal of galena until a signal was detected. This kit is used to experiment with different materials, as well as diodes, to determine how well they work as a crys...tal radio detector. A detector simply chops off the negative going radio frequency signal allowing only the positive side of the signal through. This signal is fed to the earphones which will respond to the relatively slowly moving modulated audio signal. With this kit you can experiment with the detectors and cat’s whiskers included, and you can experiment with your own objects and crystals you have. Small objects can be place in the red alligator clip to hold them. If they are too large move the red alligator clip out of the way and simply rest the object on the base plate. You can try bolts, washers, nails, a pair of pliers etc. Try your own large crystals. You might be surprised what can be used as a detector.Kit Contents • Pine Base board with alligator clips and metal base plate. Detectors: • Galena crystal potted on a brass plate. • Iron Pyrite crystal. • Razor blade (blunted). • 1N34A germanium diode. • Schottky diode. Cat's whiskers: • Graphite pencil rod. • Coiled copper wire. • Pin.
