A tremendously rare in superb condition presenting with spectacular eye-appeal in its Original Dust Jacket bearing the price of 12s. 6d. net and stating "NINTH IMPRESSION." A superior early printing of this timeless classic. When Tolkien's revolutionary 'The Hobbit' arrived on bookshelves in 1937, it redefined fantasy and introduced the genre to a new audience. Some consider it to have been the Harry Potter of the time. With the success of the first printing, the publishers decided to incur the costs of printing color illustrations in the second printing which Tolkien produced himself. The text of the first edition was also changed by the second edition to align with the story of The Lord of the Rings, soon to be published. The popularity was so great that his publisher requested a new series and thus The Lord of the Rings came about. Condition:Near Fine Book in Very Good Dust Jacket. Binding tight and square. Original full cloth green boards with dark blue stamping present exceptionally well with richly preserved original color. Text blocks lean but for a couple faint lines laterally across top near spine. Edges and corners show little to no wear with only the slightest evidence of to the bottom spine edge. Internally clean, crisp, bright and unmarked. Unread or only lightly read. Dust Jacket presents very well with bright original color and very minimal wear. Light wear to corners with very mild loss. Chipping to head and foot of spine with some loss. Full separation at rear hinge presenting mostly closed. Mild darkening to panels and spine and wear to hinges and creases.
