A scarce set of the Folio Society (2003) boxed set 'Great Philosophers of the Ancient World', comprising the following five volumes quarter bound in dark brown leather with gilt titling over decorative boards and top edges stained brown: (1) Plato, Republic; translated, with an introduction and notes by Robin Waterford, and a preface by A.C. Grayling; (2) Aristotle, Ethics; translated by J.A.K. Thompson, revised with notes and appendices by Treddenick, introduced by Jonathan Barnes, an...d with a preface by A.C. Grayling. (3) Seneca, Letters from a Stoic and Three Dialogues; Translated by Robin Campbell and C.D.N. Costa, with an introduction and notes b C.D.N.Costa, and with a preface by A.C. Grayling; (4) Lucretius, On The Nature of Things; translated by Sir Ronald Melville, with an introduction and notes by Don and Peta Fowler, and with a preface by A.C. Grayling; (5) Cicero, On The Good Life; translated, and with an introduction and notes by Michael Grant, and with a preface by A.C. Grayling. All five volumes are illustrated with specially commissioned wood engravings by Simon Brett who also designed the front and rear boards.
All the books are in near-fine condition, with no permanent ownership marking or bookplate; tight bindings and bright clean pages throughout. These were archive copies that belonged to the Folio Society itself: as such each volume contains an unusual pencil inscription at the top of the front free endpaper (see the tenth image): each inscription notes that each volume is a first edition and quotes the number of copies in the print run (only 5, 500), the unit cost price and the selling price of each volume. As these inscriptions are written in pencil they may easily be erased by any new owner; they remain untouched here as they may be of interest to some collectors of Folio Society editions. The slipcase is also in near-fine condition with negligible shelf-wear. Please see all the images provided.
