First edition, published by Miller, Orton & Mulligan in 1855. Second of Douglass' autobiographies, with two parts "Life as a Slave" and "Life as a Freeman". Also includes a 58 page appendix with his speeches, including "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?". Somewhat rough shape overall - lacking ads at rear and rear free endpage (text itself is complete). There some scribbles throughout the book, including the rear pastedown, first blank page, and on the tissue guards for the ...plates (see photos). Bookplate and newspaper articles pasted to front endpage. Front hinge a bit shaky but holding well. One signature slightly extrudes. All three plates present. Ringstains to boards, and marker from a private collection removed from base of spine (this is not an ex-library book).
