These large interesting volumes detail the history and topography of the United States as of 1856. The books are bound in half leather, but the leather covers are detached, yet present. The text is bright and clean with some darkening along the edges, but little foxing. Volume 2 has a hole where an insect bore into the pages, but didn't do a whole lot of damage. The end papers are marbled and quite attractive. There are numerous illustrations (steel engrav...ings) throughout the volumes with tissue covers.
