From his early, pathetic days in England to his triumphal career in the United States, this constantly relates past happenings and qualities to their use in his cinematic life and it traces the derivations of his style to its sources in assessing the influences of past players, both on the stage and in the films. There are the stories of the companies he worked for, of the gradual maturing of his techniques, of the progress from the early slapstick to the masterpieces of later days: there are too his Svengali leading ladies and his marital and emotional troubles: there is a wise appraisal of his stature as an artist and a man. A thoughtful, rounded picture, this should have a serious place in moving picture history.

While the events of his life are largely used to fill space between Huff's film commentary, it does provide a backdrop to what could be considered Chaplin's mindset at the time of production.
