This carving, of of women giving out a "scream, " reminds me of the Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch famous painting. It is said the famous Munch painting "The Scream" is the popular name given to a composition created by the Norwegian Expressionist artist Munch in 1893. The original German title given by ...Munch to his work was Der Schrei der Natur, and the Norwegian title is Skirk, the "Shriek".
(Please see photographs.)
(A few years ago, Edvard Munch's 1895 pastel, “The Scream” sold for a record price of just under $120 million at Sotheby's auction house in New York.)There are theories as to what and why Edvard Munch painted "The Scream, " but the question here is what was the Makonde carver attempting to convey? I couldn't ask him as we didn't share a language to allow the question. Was it a painful birth of a child, or something more complicated that drove Munch to paint "The Scream?"This carved statue was collected from the Makonde carvers working under trees, on the ground, along the, then, dirt road leading to Bagamayo, which is a little northeast from the then former capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam. It is said these carvers mainly carve from their imaginations.
The statue weighs 5 lbs -- ebony is very dense wood. The height of the women is about 19 inches. Soundly packed, the box will weigh 6 lbs, and the size of the package will be: 20" X 10" X 10".
The statue would be shipped via USPS Parcel Selected Ground, with tracking, to addresses in the USA. I sell to addresses outside the US. Please calculate the postage costs, depending on your location.
