This very early Ward Lock & Co. illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1892 and 1902/03. These were the first of those with the copperplate script design on the cover and with the words "Shilling Pictorial Guide" at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becomingknown as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps. These guides are increasingly becom...ing collectors' items. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.This particular guide dates from 1902/03. It is the 2nd edition of this title. Details as follows :Area covered : Sidmouth and Seaton, including Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Exeter and surrounding parts of South East Devon.Contents : 160 pages of text. 4 maps and plans (all present). Over 40 illustrations. 98 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements.Overall condition : Very good internally, rather worn and damaged externally.Maps : Very good. Very little wear. One small edge tear to first map. No other markings or damage.Covers : The front cover has separated from the text block. Otherwise, normal wear, with slight fading to black design. Faint mark to front cover.Spine : The spine cloth is present, but worn and splitting quite badly.Binding : The binding of the text block is very good. Just a couple of loose adverts pages inside the front cover.Pages : Normal wear. Slight discolouration, especially at edges. No markings or damage.Other :
