An Exceptionally Rare WESTERWALD Saltglaze Stoneware Pietà, 1700

A very rare and interesting saltglazed stoneware Pietà depicting Mary Magdalene with the body of Christ recently removed from the Cross, the spear-mark, highlighted in blue clearly visible on his side; Westerwald, Germany, circa 1700.
This is very robustly modeled, being a three-dimensional sculpture, and correspondingly heavy in weight. The modeling itself is excellent as you can see from the photographs provided. The figure is hollow-based.
The figure is 7 7/8 inch...es in height and shows Mary holding the recently-crucified body of Jesus in her arms. The face of Mary exhibits great compassion and is beautifully done considering the difficulty of modeling stoneware. It must have been done by a very competent potter-modeler. Personally I have never seen one of these very rare figures and we think there are very few extant examples. Dating it is quite difficult but judging by the skill exhibited by the modeler we think late 17th century is likely.
The figure is in perfect condition - no chips, cracks or restoration at all, so this is a fantastic addition to any collection of early Westerwald and an extraordinary devotional item. Don't miss it in the final seconds - this is a TRUE keeper !!!!
