Born in Mexico, she had hypertrichosis, which caused the abnormal hair growth.
Her surprising story is told here in this impressive book, which includes photos, essays, and yes, her journey home. Like Don McLe...an's Andrew McCrew (the "Mummy Man" who wasn't buried until his corpse had been displayed for decades and decades in carny shows), the mummified remains of Julia (and her son!) continued to draw crowds, be used for medical study, and was purchased and re-purchased by entrepeneurs. Some protested that she deserved a true burial in her homeland.
