Important advances in the rehabilitation of battle casualties were made here during and after World War I. A generation later, Letterman became the nation’s busiest hospital, and the first stop on home soil for the sick and wounded from the Pacific Theater of World War II. Through wars in Korea and Vietnam, and during times of peace, Letterman provided medical care to generations of soldiers and their families. The distinctive architecture and campus-like environment of the original hospital reflects an excellent match of form and function.
