The stoneware jug was produced by E. W. Hale of Boston, Massachusetts. The body was wheel-thrown and the handle was slab constructed and affixed to the body. The stamped maker's mark 'E. W. Hale, Boston' is also accompanied by a stylized, stamped numeral '3' just above it, denoting the jug to be a 3-gallon jug. The thick, stout, over-sized pouring spout is incredibly clean and nearly free of evidence it was even previously used. The hand painted cobalt blue slip floral motif decorated sidewall is nearly unblemished, unobscured by any bruises or stains. The putty white, highly reflective, glossy glaze is bright and not darkened by stains or glaze loss. It's always a great pleasure and a real treat to come across one of these decorated stoneware jugs in this kind of well-preserved condition. Wonderful.
