Offered for auction today is a VERY RARE original glass plate negative of the H.M.H.S. "Britannic, " sister ship of the famed White Star Liner "Titanic!" Taken c. 1915 while the Britannic was serving as a Hospital Ship in World War 1. She struck a mine and sank in November of 1916. This image has been compared with other surviving photographs and is believed to be an unpublished and perhaps never-before-seen photo of this liner. Possibly taken as part of a series of photos while the sh...ip was at Mudros after her maiden voyage. The background appears to be retouched, as was common during this period, and the plate is marked "H.M. Hospital Ship "Britannic"" I did my best to photograph the plate by holding it over a lamp, so please note that the shadows around the edges and light in the center are NOT part of the actual image. Some very fine details are visible and if a proper light box / scanner were to be used, the sharpness would be even better. Plate measures 6 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches and is in very nice condition with no apparent damage (chips, cracks, etc), just some minor wear / patina from age. Fresh out of a very old English collection dating back to the 1920s. A beautiful Titanic related piece of memorabilia! Be sure to check out our other auctions for more ORIGINAL ocean liner photos, including another Britannic image, RMS Olympic, Mauretania, etc!!!
