ProvenanceMy parents traveled the world in the 1950's, 60's, and 70"s and spent time all over the pacific collecting fine art. This piece was displayed in a lighted cabinet with controlled humidity. Hopefully it will find a home with one who loves Polynesian art and culture.
History of the MoaiEaster Island is known to its inhabitants as Rapa Nui, which translates to "the naval of the world". The Moai were probably carved and erected for reasons much like modern statues - to commemorate important leaders and ancestors. As an important cultural difference, however, the Polynesians of Rapa Nui saw the Moai as a source of mana, meaning power and spiritual energy. The Moai were sacred to them. Carbon dating shows that they were made starting in approximately 1000 C.E. until the second half of the seventeenth century. Over a period of 670 years, the inhabitants of this remote island quarried, carved, transported, and erected 887 of these enormous statues.
